ROCKINGHAM — A busy week of player recognition at Richmond Senior High School started on the soccer pitch Monday.

The Raider soccer team took time to celebrate its seven senior players ahead of its home match against Scotland High School.

The first of three senior nights planned this week, joining cross country and volleyball, the Raiders recognized Noah Gil, Gonzalo Gonzalez, Daryan Mendez, Adrian Padron, Landon Summerlin and foreign exchange students Erik Reichert (Germany) and Gui Romero (Brazil).

With their underclassmen teammates creating a walkway from midfield, each senior was escorted by family members and friends while introduced by public address announcer Arthur Gilliam

Head coach Chris Larsen and assistant coach Bennie Howard greeted each player and gave him a flag with Richmond’s crest and his jersey number on it as a token of appreciation.

“Senior night is one of the highlights of every season,” Larsen said. “I know these guys haven’t had the best record their senior year, but they have continued to put their entire effort in helping us each game.

“Many of the seniors this year have been multi-year starters on varsity and have been impactful in helping our program grow,” he added. “They’ve served as leaders on the field and in the classroom and we’re thankful for that. We will miss them next season, but we still have a lot of soccer ahead of us.”

The Richmond Observer will publish results from Monday’s match soon. The Richmond junior varsity soccer team didn’t play.
