Man charged with setting fire to occupied Cordova home

CORDOVA — A man is facing criminal charges after allegedly setting fire to his ex-girlfriend’s home while people were inside.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call early Wednesday morning of a woman saying 35-year-old Kenny Delaunte Jones set fire to her home on Center Street, according to a press release.

There were reportedly adults and children in the home at the time of the fire.

Deputies were given a description of Jones and began searching for him, investigators said.

A man matching Jones’ description was spotted and reportedly ran from the deputies but was caught.

After an investigation, Jones was charged with one felony count of first-degree arson and a misdemeanor count of  resisting a public officer.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.

Jail records show he is also charged with communicating threats, which carries an additional $1,000 secured bond.

Online court records show Jones already has several pending charges from the sheriff’s office: possession of methamphetamine; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver cocaine; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana; possession of marijuana paraphernalia; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Jones has no previous convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
