20 new COVID cases reported over weekend in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM ― Of the 6,291 new COVID-19 cases reported across North Carolina over the past three days, 20 of have been from Richmond County.

The local Health Department released the new numbers Monday afternoon, which included cases from the weekend, as the department no longer releases statistics on Saturdays.

This brings the monthly total to 84 and the overall total, since the first case was reported in April to 1,533.

There are currently 112 active cases, with 109 under home isolation and three hospitalized.

Also on Monday, Richmond County Schools reported that one traditional student at Monroe Avenue and one virtual student at Richmond Senior High School tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to the Health Department, 1,284 residents have recovered and of all the tests performed, 14,902 have returned a negative result.

Of the state’s 294,860 total cases, 261,719 are presumed to have recovered, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. There have also been a total of 4,615 COVID-related deaths, including 37 in Richmond County.

Free testing COVID testing began Monday in the parking lot behind the Human Services Complex on Caroline Street. Testing will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday through the rest of the month, except for Thanksgiving Day and the day after, according to a press release issued Friday afternoon.

Media outlets reported Monday that pharaceutical giant Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech announced they have developed a COVID-19 vaccine with an effectiveness rate of 90%. According to the New York Times, Pfizer’s CEO said there could be up to 40 million doses ready by the end of the year, enough for an initial shot and follow-up booster for 15-20 million people.

There are 10 other potential vaccines in late-stage testing, according to the Times.

More than 60 of the state’s 100 counties have now experienced more than 1,000 total cases.

Only four counties have had fewer than 200 cases, and they are all in the northeast corner of the state: Tyrrell (134), Camden (148), Gates (174) and Hyde (179). All four are among the state’s 10 least populated counties.

The total numbers (including recoveries) for surrounding counties are as follows:

  • Mecklenburg -36,464 (the only other counties to top 10,000 are Wake with 23,223, Guilford with 13,032, and Forsyth with 10,050)
  • Union – 6,424
  • Stanly – 2,560
  • Montgomery – 1,247
  • Anson – 772 
  • Moore – 2,412 (110 active, 57 deaths)
  • Hoke – 1,679
  • Scotland – 1,726
  • Robeson – 6,530

All numbers are from DHHS except Moore, which are from the local health department, as there has been a discrepancy with the state.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is reporting 1,576 total cases and 49 deaths in Chesterfield County and 1,220 cases and 15 deaths in Marlboro County.
