26th COVID-related death reported in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department announced on Sunday that it has been notified of the county’s 26th COIVID-related death.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell said the individual died at a healthcare facility in the county.

“Please join us with your thoughts and prayers for this family,” Jarrell said.

This is the seventh death for the month of October, with three being reported on Oct. 3, the fourth on Oct. 7, the fifth on Oct. 12, and the most recent on Oct. 15. There were also seven reported for the month of September.

The 26 residents have ranged in age from 31 to 95 years old: nine have been 80 or older; eight have been in their 60s; six in their 70s; two in their 50s; and one who was 31.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: three African American females, five African American males, 11 Caucasian females and seven Caucasian males.

Most patients have died in a hospital, although four were in a healthcare facility and one was outside a healthcare setting, reports show.

It is not known if any of the patients had underlying conditions.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there had been 3,934 COVID-related deaths across the state as of Oct. 18. Johns Hopkins University reports there have been 219,556 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 1,111,761 globally.

Hospitalizations have been on the rise in the state in October, reaching a high of 1,152 on Wednesday. Records show that on Oct. 17, 250 patients suspected of having COVID-19 were admitted within the past 24 hours, for a total of 1,129.

The Health Department reported only four new cases on Saturday, making 226 local cases for the month of October (100 for the week) and only the second reporting day with fewer than 10 new cases.

The county’s overall total is now up to 1,273 since the first case was reported in April. Richmond was one of the last 10 counties of the state’s 100 to have a positive case.

As of Saturday, there were 151 active cases, with 10 hospitalized and 141 under home isolation.

According to the Health Department, 1,097 individuals have recovered  and 11,801 have tested negative.
