HAMLET — An adult and two teens are facing charges after allegedly shooting at each other late last week.
According to Maj. Hudson Chitwood with the Hamlet Police Department, two officers heard gunshots near the intersection of Rollins Avenue and Terry Street around 2:13 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22.
Soon after, the officers reportedly saw three suspects running down the street.
One juvenile is accused of shooting into a vehicle occupied by 22-year-old Anthony Harrington-Galbreath and another juvenile.
The two in the vehicle reportedly chased the initial shooter down Terry Street, shooting at him — right toward the nearby officers.
One of the suspects was reportedly caught by police while the other two fled. However, one of those two was caught and held at gunpoint by a resident until officers could arrive.
“I was proud that a Hamlet citizen was willing and able to assist us in detaining an armed suspect,” Chitwood said. “It shows a lot of bravery.”
All three were taken into custody and charged. Police do not release the names of juveniles because of their ages.
Police also reportedly recovered four firearms during the investigation, including one that had been reported stolen.
Two of the suspects are reportedly from Hamlet.
Chitwood said the suspects were in custody before there was a need to lockdown nearby Fairview Heights Elementary School.
Harrington-Galbreath was held in the Richmond County Jail on a $150,000 secured bond until Monday afternoon, when he was bailed out, on charges including attempted first-degree murder, discharging a firearm in city limits, and going armed to the terror of the people.
(Note: The RO was unable to find his charges on eCourts Monday).
Harrington-Galbreath appears to have no prior convictions in North Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
