ROCKINGHAM — A man released from federal prison two years ago following a conviction for a 2014 bank robbery is currently in the Richmond County Jail waiting to be picked up by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Jail records show 50-year-old Jason Haynes West is being held without bond pending his transfer to federal custody. He was booked at 11 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service office for the Middle District of North Carolina, West’s warrant is currently sealed, so what he is charged with is not yet public. No court date has yet been set.
As this writer previously reported for the Richmond County Daily Journal, Haynes was convicted in 2015 for robbing the Hamlet BB&T the previous year.
Haynes was reportedly riding an orange bicycle when he arrived at the bank in December of 2014. Wearing white gloves and a white toboggan, with his face concealed, he handed the teller a threatening note demanding money. He then fled the scene with $1,100.
Haynes was caught nearly a week later when then-Hamlet Police Chief Scott Waters noticed the bike while responding to a call about a suspicious person riding by another bank on a bicycle.
At the time of his arrest, West had pending charges related to larcenies from both a home and business in Hamlet.
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show West was convicted two months prior to the robbery of larceny after breaking and entering.
West was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison for the bank robbery, in addition to three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment.
Records with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons show West was released Dec. 27, 2019.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
