East Rockingham shooting suspect taken into custody; sheriff thanks public

ROCKINGHAM — A man suspected in a Saturday shooting has been apprehended, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Just hours after issuing a call for help looking for 23-year-old Thomas Owen White, the sheriff’s office announced that the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

White is accused of shooting 18-year-old Julius Tyrone Leak of Rockingham in a gravel parking lot on Church Street in East Rockingham.

Leak was taken to the hospital following the shooting, but investigators have released no details on his condition.

“Thank you to the community for stepping up and sharing our post,” Sheriff Mark Gulledge said in a statement. “Thank you to those that called in and provided information of White’s location, it allows us to provide some closure for the victim and his family.”
