HAMLET — A man is facing child sex abuse charges following a three-month investigation by police.
According to the Hamlet Police Department, investigators were notified in late February about the alleged sexual abuse by the Richmond County Department of Social Services.
Investigators arrested 34-year-old Duane Joseph Calhoun, of Hamlet, on Thursday, June 2, charging him with one count each of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult and felony child abuse by a sexual act.
Calhoun is being held in the Richmond County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 16.
Online court records show Calhoun has several pending traffic citations, including driving with a revoked license and without insurance.
Calhoun has no previous convictions in the state, according to online records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
