HAMLET PD: Traffic stop yields ‘large quantity of cocaine’

HAMLET — Police have charged a man with trafficking narcotics following a traffic stop.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, officers pulled over 41-year-old Calvin Curtis Witherspoon on April 20.

The reason for the initial stop is not given in the department’s Facebook post.

Police reportedly found “a large quantity of cocaine,” unspecified drug paraphernalia and two concealed handguns.

Witherspoon was arrested and charged with: trafficking in cocaine; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver cocaine; possession of drug paraphernalia; and carrying a concealed gun.

He is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $100,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 4.

Online records appear to show Witherspoon has no other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
