Hamlet Police identify, charge one suspect in Griffin Dodge theft

HAMLET — Police have identified one man suspected of stealing vehicles from a local car dealership last month.

Investigators with the Hamlet Police Department have obtained warrants for the arrest of 42-year-old Dewanne Lemar White, charging him with three counts of larceny of a motor vehicle.

White is the only one of four suspects believed to be involved in the theft that has been identified, according to investigators.

The four men are accused of stealing three vehicles from Griffin Dodge late on Feb. 7 or early the morning of Feb. 8, according to police.

Initially, the department only announced that two vehicles were stolen: Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and a Dodge Ram TRX pickup truck.

Investigators confirmed Tuesday that a Dodge Challenger Scat Pack was also stolen.

The Hellcat was recovered in Alabama, according to investigators.

White is from North Carolina, but not Richmond County, police say.

Online court records show a Dewanne Lamar White with multiple pending charges in Mecklenburg County: one count each of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed gun, resisiting a public officer, and being a habitual felon. He also has five traffic charges and infractions.

White has an extensive criminal history from 1997-2014, including multiple convictions for stealing vehicles.

The HPD announced later on Feb. 8 that a reward was being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
