Hamlet police investigating break-ins, vehicle theft

HAMLET — Police are encouraging residents to keep their vehicles locked following a recent rash of break-ins.

The Hamlet Police Department last week posted security video that appears to show a suspect wearing a hooded sweatshirt walk up to the passenger side of a pickup truck, parked in a driveway, and open the door.

As the first suspect leans inside, another suspect — also wearing a hooded sweatshirt — walks up behind.

The first suspect then appears to close the door and they both leave.

Investigators say the same suspects broke into a garage and stole two bicycles and rode them to a location where they stole a car.

HPD posted photos of a 2017 Honda Civic with the license plate FAR-9450, reported stolen from Shaw Road, asking residents to be on the lookout. According to investigators, the car was unlocked and the keys were inside.

“Please remember to lock your car doors and remove valuables at night!” the Facebook post reads.

Police also asked any residents of Adele Street, Boyette Street, Stacy Avenue, Juanita Avenue, Hyman Avenue, Shaw Road, Sams Road or Virginia Ann Avenue to review their security video for “anything suspicious.”

As of Friday afternoon, the video had been shared more than 100 times on Facebook.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Hamlet Police Department at 910-582-2551, Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454 or use the P3 Tips app.
