HAMLET — A stranded motorist wound up being charged with drug and weapons offenses Thursday evening.
According to the Hamlet Police Department, 28-year-old Jeremy Austin Goins, of Hamlet, was on the side of the road after his vehicle broke down.
Officers stopped to assist Goins and reportedly found several guns — including a stolen handgun — plus a small amount of methamphetamine, small amount of marijuana and two sets of scales.
Goins was arrested and charged with possession of stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, simple possession of a Schedule II Controlled substance, simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $15,000 secured bond and released just before 11:30 Friday morning.
Online court records show Goins has several pending traffic citations, including speeding and two counts of driving with a revoked license.
Goins has no previous convictions in the state, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
