Hamlet Police searching for Speedway robbery suspect, reward offered

HAMLET — Police say they have identified one of the men accused of robbing a local gas station last month and are asking for help locating him.

Investigators with the Hamlet Police Department have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 23-year-old Braxton Montgomery Lewis, of Rockingham, charging him with robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Lewis is accused of robbing the Speedway gas station in Hamlet the morning of Jan. 24.

According to a previous Facebook post by HPD, Lewis  walked into the store wearing a camouflaged facemask and gloves. He reportedly showed the store clerk that he had a gun in his waistband and demanded money.

After he ran out of the door, the clerk reportedly followed and fired two shots at him with her own handgun before calling police.

That was the second time in a week the station had been robbed. Another man reportedly robbed the store on Jan. 18.

According to Sgt. A. Zeppetella, Lewis has “a notable” cross tattoo in the center of his face between his eyes, as well as a small tattoo under his left eye.

Anyone with information on Lewis’ location is encouraged to call HPD at 910-582-2551 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.

An unspecified reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

HPD is also offering rewards for information leading to the arrests of the other robbery suspect as well as that of two men accused of stealing vehicles from Griffin Automotive.
