Hamlet police seek apartment arson suspect

HAMLET — Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant for a man they believe is responsible for a weekend apartment fire.

The Hamlet Police Department, in cooperation with the community and unnamed “state agencies,” was able to establish probable cause to charge Emmanuel Triewon Nelson with starting the fire, according to a Facebook post published on Wednesday on the department’s page.

The Hamlet fire and police departments responded to a structure fire around 4 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Washington Court Apartments.

No injuries were reported as all but one of the apartments in the section were vacant, according to fire officials. However, it was the vacancies that led investigators to suspect arson.

Anyone with information on Nelson’s whereabouts is encouraged to call the Hamlet Police Department at 910-582-2551 or send a message through Facebook, or call Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.

Online records show Nelson has a pending charge of communicating threats and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 19.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
