Hamlet shooting puts Monroe Ave. on lockdown; police seek vehicle

HAMLET— Police are asking the public’s help in locating a vehicle of interest in connection to an early afternoon shooting that resulted in a nearby school being placed on lockdown.

According to Chief Dennis Brown, shots were fired on Monroe Avenue near Seaboard Street around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday.

No injuries were reported, however Brown said that a vehicle and home were both struck with bullets.

Those gunshots were heard around the campus of Monroe Avenue Elementary and police were dispatched to the school, according to Kylie McDonald, public information officer for Richmond County Schools..

Police and school resources officers reportedly cleared the school for dismissal and officers remained until all bus and car riders had left the campus, according to McDonald.

HPD released a photo of a vehicle of interest, asking anyone with information to call Maj. Chitwood at 910-582-2551 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.

The incident is still under investigation.
