Hamlet shooting suspect caught in Greensboro

HAMLET — A man wanted in connection to a shooting that left two people hospitalized was found several counties away late last week.

The Hamlet Police Department announced Oct. 29 that 30-year-old Michael Dequan Johnson, of Hamlet, was located — with the help of the U.S. Marshal Service — in Greensboro.

Johnson was captured, interviewed and processed with help from the Greensboro Police Department, according to a Facebook post.

Johnson is accused of shooting a man and woman in the 30 block of Main Street around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19. Investigators said both victims had multiple gunshot wounds and were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

According to court records, Johnson is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder; one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury; two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

As of Nov. 2, Johnson was still being held in the Greensboro Detention Center. Jail records there show Johnson is also charged with two counts of injury to real property, and one count each of communicating threats and failure to appear on a misdemeanor.

(Note: The attempted murder charges do not appear in jail records and the newer charges do not appear in online court records.)

Records show Johnson was given a $1,000 secured bond on the failure to appear charge, but no bond is listed for the other charges.

According to state court records, Johnson already has several pending charges: two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon; and one count each of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, intimidating a witness and obtaining property by false pretenses.

Johnson also has several prior convictions, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

Johnson served less than two years in prison following a 2011 conviction on five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and one count of discharging a firearm within city limits.

In 2016, Johnson was convicted of assault on a female.

The following year, he was convicted of possessing stolen goods, forgery, speeding to elude arrest, and obtaining property by false pretenses.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
