ROCKINGHAM — The husband of a woman found dead over the weekend is being held on a fugitive warrant from another state.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirms that 56-year-old Melvin Eugene Cagle is facing a criminal charge in South Carolina.
The York County Sheriff’s Office posted to Facebook on July 23 announcing that Cagle was wanted for attempted murder in connection to a shooting that occured around 6 a.m. July 21 in Clover, South Carolina.
The post included an old mugshot of Cagle and a photo of his vehicle, a ‘90s model Chevrolet pickup truck with a silver tool box.
York County deputies updated the post on July 25, announcing that Cagle had been taken into custody in North Carolina.
Richmond County Jail records show Cagle was booked at 1:29 a.m. July 26, and is being held on a $500,000 secured bond.
Online court records show Cagle has a court appearance for the extradition scheduled for Aug. 25.
Cagle is also scheduled to appear in a Montgomery County court Sept. 17 for several traffic infractions: two counts of speeding; one count of reckless driving to endanger; and one count of driving with a revoked license.
Investigators confirmed Wednesday that Cagle was married to 53-year-old Lorie Ann Campbell Cagle of Hamlet, whose body was found around 12:30 a.m. Sunday near the exit ramp for Haywood Parker Road off U.S. 220.
Her death is being investigated as a homicide.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Melvin Cagle’s South Carolina charge is unrelated to his wife’s death.
Melvin Cagle’s name is listed with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction, but no previous convictions were available during a search on Wednesday.
South Carolina court records show he was convicted in York County of disorderly conduct in 2018. He was also cited in Horry County (Myrtle Beach) for an open container violation in 1995.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
CORRECTION: The York County post was made on July 23; and a clarification has been added to indicate the South Carolina charges are unrelated. 1:43 p.m. 7-29-21.
