Man accused of blocking traffic, having meth at Richmond County Jail

ELLERBE — A Montgomery County man accused of blocking traffic on rural roads is charged with having drugs at jail.

According to a magistrate’s order, 30-year-old Lewis Russell Callicutt, of Candor, was standing in the roadway of Clayton Carriker and Godfrey roads, about six miles north of Ellerbe, blocking the flow of traffic.

Callicutt was arrested without warrant and taken to the Richmond County Jail where deputies allegedly found an unspecified amount of meth on his person.

Callicutt is charged with one felony count each of possession of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance on prison or jail premises, as well as a traffic infraction for impeding traffic.

He is being held under a combined $10,500 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 17.

Online court records show Callicutt has no other pending charges in the state.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Callicutt was convicted in 2017 of driving with a revoked license, as well as two counts of driving while impaired, stemming from separate incidents months apart in 2015.

Callicutt’s first conviction was a Level 5 DWI in 2011.

Those convictions were in Montgomery County.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
