ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing assault and abuse charges following a reported domestic violence incident Monday evening.
According to the Rockingham Police Department, 36-year-old Matthew Alexander McSwain had been following his wife around town.
She reportedly pulled into the old Food King parking lot and McSwain followed and rammed his minivan into her pickup truck. McSwain allegedly then backed up, and crashed into the truck again.
McSwain left the parking lot and was observed turning right onto S. Lawrence Street then left onto Greene Street.
The alleged victim turned left onto S. Lawrence Street and pulled into the back parking lot of the Rockingham Police Department.
Police say McSwain was found a short time later at his home.
McSwain was arrested and charged with: four felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; three misdemeanor counts of child abuse; one count of communicating threats; and one count of hit and run failing to report property damage.
He is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $500,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 8.
McSwain appears to have no other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
