Man charged with 5 counts of statutory sex offense in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — A man is being held on a multi-million-dollar bond after being charged with several counts of a sex-related crime.

Online records with the Richmond County Jail and N.C. Court System show that 28-year-old Joshua David Butler is charged with five felony counts of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult.

Records show Butler was booked into the jail at 1:58 p.m. on Nov. 22 and that he was given a $2 million secured bond.

Butler is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, Nov. 30.

No other details about the case are currently available. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, the original warrant had not been returned to the Clerk of Court’s office. Warrants are not publicly available until the original has been returned.

Jail records show that the arresting and charging agency is the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Other than a seatbelt violation, Butler appears to have no other charges in the state. He also appears to have no prior convictions.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
