Man charged with shooting teen girl; Hamlet Police still investigating

HAMLET — A man is facing charges in a weekend shooting that sent a teenage girl to the hospital.

Officers with the Hamlet Police Department responded to a call on Spring Street around 10:30 p.m. June 9 in reference to shots being fired, according to Maj. Hudson Chitwood.

When the officers arrived on scene, they reportedly found a 16-year-old girl who had been shot in the back.

The teen, whose name has not been released, was airlifted to an undisclosed hospital where she is still receiving treatment and is currently expected to recover, according to Chitwood.

Investigators processed the scene and reportedly received a description of the suspect vehicle from witnesses.

Officers also went to a hospital to speak with 25-year-old Xavier Malik York — who had also been shot — and collect evidence, Chitwood said.

York reportedly waived his Miranda rights and confessed to firing the round that struck the 16-year-old.

Richmond County Jail records show York was booked at 2:54 a.m. June 10 on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and a misdemeanor charge of simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance (marijuana).

York is being held on a $50,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 29.

Online records show York has no other pending charges or prior convictions in the state.

Chitwood said the shooting was drug related and the investigation is still ongoing as detectives seek additional shooters, including the individual who shot York.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
