Man charged with stealing tools in Hamlet break-in

HAMLET — Police say they found several stolen items at the home of a man charged in a recent break-in.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, 36-year-old Ryan McRae Steagall, broke into a building outside of a Hyland Avenue home on Jan. 25 and stole several tools, including an impact wrench, chainsaw and drill.

Stegall is also accused of breaking into a vehicle at the home.

Investigators say they served a search warrant at Steagall’s home Monday morning and recovered some of the tools that were reported stolen. Those items have been returned to the owner.

Stegall was arrested and charged with: breaking and entering; larceny after breaking and entering; breaking and entering a motor vehicle; and misdemeanor larceny.

Richmond County Jail records show Steagall is also charged with several counts of failing to appear in court in both Richmond and Hoke counties.

He is being held under a combined $19,900 secured bond.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety has Steagall listed as a probation absconder.

Records show he received a 12-month suspended sentence in Scotland County following a misdemeanor larceny conviction Oct. 27, 2020.

From 2002-03, Steagall was convicted in Richmond County of two counts of simple assault, communicating threats, misdemeanor larceny and felony breaking and entering.

His probation on the latter two charges was revoked and he spent less than four months behind bars.

Less than a year following his release in May 2004, Stegall was convicted of common law forgery and misdemeanor breaking and entering. Later in 2005, he was convicted of additional fraud charges and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

Steagall was convicted of more fraud charges in 2007, and misdemeanor larceny in Scotland County in 2010.

Convictions in other counties include:

  • Wake – assault with a deadly weapon, damage to property (2011)
  • Durham – larceny over $1000 (2014)
  • Union – misdemeanor larceny (2010)
  • Moore – obtaining property by false pretenses (2010), shoplifting (2012), larceny over $1,000, misdemeanor larceny (2014)

State records show his last name has been spelled both “Stegall” and “Steagall.”

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
