Man shot outside Hamlet, case still under investigation

HAMLET ― A man is in critical condition after allegedly being shot by a homeowner late Wednesday.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the man who was shot had reportedly entered a garage on Black Smoke Drive where the homeowner was working.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was reportedly told multiple times to leave the property and refused.

A woman reportedly came out of the home and the man allegedly grabbed her. The homeowner then allegedly fired one shot, injuring the man.

Personnel with Hamlet Fire and Rescue treated the gunshot victim, who was later airlifted to an undisclosed trauma center in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

No charges had been filed as of 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The case is currently still under investigation and has been turned over to the district attorney’s office, according to the sheriff’s office.
