ROCKINGHAM — A woman was reportedly airlifted to a hospital Thursday night after being hit by a vehicle — hours after she was arrested and charged for causing a disturbance at a local restaurant.

According to the Rockingham Police Department, Vonetta Shanta Gibson was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct for refusing to leave following a domestic disturbance at Los Mariachis Mexican Bar and Grill.

Gibson was bailed out of jail by the man she had been arguing with, refused a ride home and insisted on walking, police say.

She was reportedly in the roadway when she was hit by a vehicle on County Home Road, somewhere between FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond and Clemmer Road, around 11 p.m., according to police.

Gibson was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill with a broken leg, but police say she was slated to be discharged late Friday afternoon.

Police say the driver will not be charged since they stopped and Gibson was in the road.

Gibson’s charges did not appear in the state court system late Friday afternoon and records show she has no prior convictions in North Carolina.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

UPDATE: 8-27-22 5:41 p.m.

Police said Saturday that Gibson was still hospitalized in “serious but stable condition.”
