Probation absconder with FTA warrants charged with leading Richmond County deputies on chase

ROCKINGHAM — A man wanted for not showing up in court is accused of leading Richmond County sheriff’s deputies on a chase just before noon Friday.

According to investigators with the sheriff’s office, 26-year-old Jacob Ryan Carver had five outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court on previous charges and had absconded parole for possession of a firearm by a felon.

Deputies reportedly received information that Carver was at his home on Crawford Road in Ellerbe, but left before they could arrive, according to investigators.

A description of Carver’s vehicle was sent out and he was spotted travelling south on U.S. 220 by Sgt. Paul McDole, investigators said.

McDole initiated a traffic stop, but Carver allegedly sped off as the deputy was approaching the vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, Carver led deputies on a chase through Rockingham, past Richmond Senior High School, onto Ledbetter Road and into the Sandhills Game Lands.

While on the dirt portion of the road, Carver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree before fleeing on foot.

Investigators say he was caught a short time later.

Neither Carver nor any of the deputies were injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail around 1:43 p.m., records show.

Carver is being held on a combined $26,000 on the FTA warrants — three counts of failure to appear on a felony and two counts of failure to appear on a misdemeanor — and without bond on the parole violation.

He was also charged with fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of injury to personal property and was given a $20,000 secured bond on those charges, as well as a $2,500 secured bond for resisting a public officer.

Online court records show Carver has the following pending charges: two counts of possession of methamphetamine; one count of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance; one misdemeanor count each of simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and possession of drug paraphernalia; and driving with revoked license.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Carver was first convicted in 2016 on a misdemeanor count of assault on a female.

In 2018, he was convicted of possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance and initially given probation, which was revoked in Moore County, landing him behind bars for nearly four months earlier this year.

Records show he was released in June and his probation was set to end March 10, 2021.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
