RCSO: Human remains found in burned car on Richmond County roadside

ELLERBE — Human remains were found inside a burned-vehicle Monday morning, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

A patrol deputy was reportedly flagged down by a resident around 9:25 a.m. who reported a vehicle appeared to have been burned on the side of Covington Community Road, northwest of Ellerbe.

The deputy reportedly found what looked to be charred remains in the trunk while gathering identification information on the vehicle.

The area was secured and the deputy called investigators who, along with the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation Arson Unit, processed the scene.

The human remains found in the trunk have been sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Raleigh for identification, according to a press release issued late Monday night.
