RCSO: Suspects in Richmond County shootings caught in New York

ROCKINGHAM — Two men are facing charges in connection with a July shooting after reportedly fleeing north.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Ismael Felix Sanchez Jr. and 19-year-old Gabriel Esteven-David Valdes are suspects in a shooting in the parking lot of the convenience store on the corner of Long Drive and Mill Road on July 19.

The two were reportedly arrested by U.S. Marshals in Binghamton, New York, on their outstanding warrants from Richmond County, which included charges from the Hamlet Police Department and the sheriff’s office.

Valdes and Sanchez reportedly waived extradition to return to North Carolina. Investigators went to New York to pick them up and brought them back on Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Both were booked into the Richmond County Jail just before 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, records show.

Sanchez is charged with: robbery with a dangerous weapon; conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon; assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; discharging a weapon into an occupied property; felony assault with serious bodily injury; misdemeanor assault with serious injury; carrying a concealed weapon; discharging a firearm in city limits; possession of a firearm on city property; two counts of injury to real property; and simple affray.

Valdes is charged with: robbery with a dangerous weapon; conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon; assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury; assault inflicting serious injury; two counts of assault by pointing a gun; injury to real property; simple affray; and communicating threats.

Sanchez is being held on a combined $1,001,000 secured bond; Valdes is being held on a combined $1 million secured bond. Both are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 28.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Sanchez was convicted in 2018 on two counts of possessing stolen goods. Valdes has no prior convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
