Richmond County investigators charge man with trafficking meth, other offenses, following purchase

ROCKINGHAM — A man who has been out of prison for less than six months and was on bail for other pending charges is back in jail, charged with multiple drug offenses including meth trafficking.

Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office purchased 59 grams of meth in East Rockingham from 52-year-old Kim Lamont Harris of Rockingham, according to a press release issued late Saturday night.

They were then able to obtain a search warrant for Harris’ home where they reportedly found and seized:

  • 178.1 grams of methamphetamine
  • 3.9 grams of crack cocaine
  • Two doses of clonazepam
  • Unspecified drug paraphernalia

Investigators with the Community Impact Team also reportedly seized $2,190 and a 2006 Mercedes Benz.

Harris was arrested Friday, Feb. 10 and charged with: two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine; three counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver methamphetamine; three counts of possession of methamphetamine; two counts of maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; felony possession of cocaine; possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine; two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia; and one count of simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance.

(Note: The press release shows a count of possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, which is not reflected in jail records.)

Harris was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held on a $1 million secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court March 3.

Online court records show Harris has several pending charges from 2021: two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance; one count each of maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Harris also has several charges and citations pending from 2022 including fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer and two counts of reckless driving to endanger.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show Harris has a criminal history dating back to 1987 when he was convicted on three counts of misdemeanor larceny.

Two years later, he was convicted of breaking and entering and larceny, and breaking and entering vehicles, as well as breaking and entering and misdemeanor larceny, and spent most of the next six years incarcerated.

In 1997, Harris was convicted of second-degree rape and second-degree sexual offense, and two counts of possession with intent to sell a Schedule IV controlled substance and spent another 11 years behind bars.

Harris was again convicted in 2010 of possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance and assault on an officer or state employee, then again in 2011 (in Anson County) of assault with a deadly weapon and assault inflicting serious bodily injury. Those convictions landed him in prison for another 19 months.

In June 2014, Harris was convicted of being a habitual felon and possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance. The following month, he was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender in Guilford County.

Harris was released from prison in June 2021 but went back in January 2022 for eight months on a post-release revocation. His most recent release date is Sept. 15, 2022.
