ROCKINGHAM — A man charged with making purchases with a stolen debit card is also accused of escaping custody.
According to warrants, 20-year-old Javonte Thomas James, of Eason Drive, broke into a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe on Aug. 31 and stole a wallet, Social Security card, two debit cards, a foreign ID, fishing license, diaper bag and nearly $30 in currency.
James allegedly used the stolen cards to make six unspecified purchases of unspecified amounts at three convenience stores and a grocery store.
Records show James, who is serving an 18-month suspended sentence out of Wake County, was also picked up on a probation violation and escaped from the Richmond County Jail on Sept. 1, the same day he was served with the warrants for the aforementioned crimes.
James is being held on a 100,000 secured bond for the felony charge of escaping a local jail and a $500,000 secured bond for the probation violation, according to jail records.
The other charges — six counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, breaking and entering a motor vehicle and misdemeanor larceny — do not appear in online jail records.
James is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 16.
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show James was convicted Dec. 15, 2020 of felony breaking and entering in Wake County. Several months earlier, he was convicted there on misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possessing stolen goods.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
