Richmond County sex offender accused of not updating address

ROCKINGHAM — A registered sex offender is accused of failing to report his change of address to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Richmond County Jail records, 25-year-old Jacob David Shaw is charged with a felony count of failing to report a new address as a sex offender.

Jail records also show a charge of taking indecent liberties with a minor, but Chief Deputy Jay Childers said that is in relation to a felony probation violation.

Shaw was convicted on two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child in 2021 and was given a suspended sentence, according to online records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction.

Records with the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry indicate Shaw was 20 years old and one of the victims was 15. In the other case, Shaw was 21 and the victim was 9.

Shaw was given 24 months of probation.

Records show he registered as a sex offender on Oct. 4, 2021 and his address was last verified Oct. 17, 2023. His minimum registration period is listed as 10 years.
