Richmond County Sheriff’s Office charges man with murder, kidnapping, concealing death, other charges

ROCKINGHAM — A man was booked into the Richmond County Jail Wednesday evening on multiple charges — including murder.

Jail records show that 28-year-old Cano Ernesto Sanchez was processed at 6:43 p.m. and is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office posted about the incident on Facebook just after 9 p.m.

According to the post, deputies responded to a call on Morrow Street in the Jefferson Park neighborhood just before 6 a.m.

“The only information the 911 Center could get was that a female had been assaulted and possibly killed,” the post reads.

The narrative continues:

“When deputies arrived on the scene, a Hispanic male ran from the residence and entered a car parked in the yard. Deputies attempted to get the male out of the (driver’s) seat and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the male attempted to gain control of one deputy’s firearm and was tased. Once in custody, deputies entered the residence and located a female that had succumbed to her injuries she had received during the prior incident.

“One deputy received injuries during the apprehension, he was evaluated and treated at FirstHealth Richmond and released.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification and the investigation is ongoing.

He is being held without bond and a court date is not yet listed.

State records show Sanchez has no other pending charges or previous convictions.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
