Rockingham Police charge man in Cauthen Drive shooting

ROCKINGHAM — Police charged a man Monday in a shooting from nearly two weeks prior.

According to reports, 27-year-old Albert Lemont Huggins, of Cauthen Drive, fired several shots from a rifle at neighbors.

Two casings were reportedly found in front of the address where the shooting occured.

A witness named Huggins in the report.

Reports show Huggins was taken into custody without incident at the Rockingham Police Department July 12.

While the original incident report only indicates that Huggins shot towards the victims, he is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Huggins is also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and discharging a firearm in city limits, the latter being a violation of a local ordinance.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $250,000 secured bond. Jail records show is also being held on a $2,321.50 bond for child support. Huggins is scheduled to appear in court July 26 on the criminal charges.

Police previously responded to shootings in the Cauthen Drive area on June 9 and 15.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Huggins’ parole ended July 2, 2020 after serving six months from a 2017 breaking and entering conviction, for which he was originally given probation. That probation was revoked when convicted in 2019 of a violation for having a controlled substance at a penal institution.

Huggins was first convicted in February 2012 of breaking and entering and assault on an officer or state employee, and two months later for obtaining property by false pretenses. His probation was revoked in 2013 following his conviction on two more counts of felony breaking and entering.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
