Rockingham Police charge man in fatal hit and run

ROCKINGHAM — Police have charged a Rockingham man in the death of a Hamlet woman who was found earlier this year in the road near a fast food restaurant.

Thomas Terry III, 36, is charged with one felony count each of felony hit and run resulting in injury or death and involuntary manslaughter after allegedly running over Dena Brock Poplin in March.

According to an incident report from the Rockingham Police Department, Officer J.D. Webster responded to Burger King just before 3 p.m. March 2 “in reference to a female unconscious in the roadway.”

The initial report states that Poplin was “possibly” run over by a suspect vehicle, listed as Hyundai Santa Fe.

Poplin died on March 3, according to her obituary with McNeill Funeral Home.

Terry was arrested July 18 and booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court July 29.

Online records with the N.C. court system and N.C. Department of Public Safety show Terry has no other pending charges or previous criminal convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
