ROCKINGHAM — Police have made an arrest in a shooting from last week that sent a man to the hospital with a leg injury.
Jail records show that 51-year-old James Thomas Griggs Jr. was booked just after 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 — 13 hours after the reported shooting.
Police allege that Griggs got into a fight with another man around 10 a.m. earlier that day on Mill Road near the intersection with Watson Avenue.
Griggs allegedly pulled out a gun during the fight and shot the other man in the leg. The victim was reportedly taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.
Investigators with the Rockingham Police Department have charged Griggs with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and discharging a firearm in city limits.
Jail records show Griggs is also charged by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office with breaking and entering a motor vehicle and misdemeanor larceny, as well as a misdemeanor probation violation.
He is being held on a combined $260,000 secured bond. Griggs is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 8 on the recent shooting-related charges. Jail records show his court date on the other charges as Feb. 5.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Griggs was convicted in October 2023 of misdemeanor larceny and was given an 18-month suspended sentence.
Griggs was first convicted on four misdemeanor counts of common law forgery in 2007. His probation was revoked about a year later and he served less than two months behind bars.
His only other conviction was for maintaining any place for a controlled substance in 2018.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
