Sex offender facing charges in Union, Mecklenburg counties held in Richmond County Jail

ROCKINGHAM — A convicted sex offender is in the Richmond County Jail on registration charges from two counties further west.

Jail records show 33-year-old Aaron Lamontee Fauntleroy is charged with failing to report a new address as a sex offender in Union County and failing to register as a sex offender in Mecklenburg County.

(Editor’s Note: State records list various spellings for Fauntleroy’s middle name.)

He is being held on a combined $20,000 secured bond and has court dates scheduled for March 18 and 20.

Records show Fauntleroy was arrested March 3, however the new charges were not reflected in online court records the afternoon of March 4.

According to the N.C. Sex Offender Registry, Fauntleroy was convicted in 2018 of one count of taking indecent liberties with a child in Cleveland County.

The abuse took place in 2017 when Fauntleroy was 26 and the victim was 2, the registry shows. Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show he received a six-month split probation, but only served less than two months behind bars.

His minimum registration period is listed as 10 years.

According to the registry, Fauntleroy’s Charlotte address was last verified on Nov. 15, 2021.

Although the registry shows no violations, records show he was convicted in 2020 on two counts of failing to register as a sex offender in Cleveland County. His probation was revoked on the original charge and he was imprisoned for 20 months.

Thirteen months after his release, he was back in prison for six months on a post-release revocation. Fauntleroy’s probation is currently set to end in 2026.

Fauntleroy has other prior convictions.

He was first convicted in 2011 of possessing stolen goods in Union County, then in 2014 of communicating threats in Lincoln County.

The year prior to the indecent liberties conviction, Fauntleroy was found guilty of attempted larceny of firearms in Lincoln County. His probation was revoked and he served 10 months, concurrent with the sex crime conviction.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
