EAST ROCKINGHAM — Charges may be coming in a midday shooting at a convenience store earlier this week.
Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and crews from FirstHealth EMS responded to a call of a shooting at Mill Road Grocery around 12:16 p.m. Monday, Sheriff Mark Gulledge said Tuesday.
The victim, 23-year-old Samantha Jo Smith, of Hamlet, was treated for her injuries by EMS at the scene and later flown to an undisclosed trauma center for further treatment, where she was listed in critical, but stable condition, Gulledge said.
The suspect, 29-year-old Jeremy Austin Goins, also of Hamlet, fled the scene. However, the sheriff said Goins has been in contact with deputies and is supposed to turn himself in Tuesday.
“The case is isolated to Smith and Goins and was not considered a random act,” Gulledge said.
The sheriff added that charges may be forthcoming pending completion of the investigation.
The Hamlet Police Department a year ago charged Goins with possession of a stolen firearm and meth, among other crimes, but online court records show no scheduled court appearances.
Goins has no previous convictions in North Carolina.
