South Carolina man charged with sex crime in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — A South Carolina man is facing a sex crime in Richmond County.

David Edward Thompson, 73, of Cheraw, South Carolina, is accused of engaging in a sex act with a child under the age of 13.

The alleged incident took place on Nov. 29, according to a warrant for Thompson’s arrest issued Dec. 1.

Thompson was arrested Sunday and charged with a single count of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail and initially held without bond.

Online court records show Thompson’s bond was set at $150,000 secured on Dec. 2. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 9.

Thompson does not appear to have any other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina, or Chesterfield or Marlboro counties in South Carolina.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
