ROCKINGHAM — Investigators from two departments are still trying to identify a man accused of trying to rob one Richmond County gas station and making off with cash from another.

The Rockingham posted a still photo from surveillance video to its Facebook page on Feb. 22 of a suspect they say tried to rob Connor’s Convenience on East Broad Avenue earlier that day.

The suspect reportedly walked into the store around 6:30 a.m. but was only inside for “a very short period of time,” according to RPD Detective Clint Neeley.

But in that short time frame, the suspect managed to loose off two shots from a firearm, with one bullet going into a ceiling tile and another hitting near the cash register.

Neeley said nothing was taken and the case is still under investigation.

The same suspect is believed to have robbed Shiv’s Corner, at the intersection of Wiregrass and County Home roads, a short time later, according to Chief Deputy Jay Childers with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Childers say no shots were fired, but the suspect did leave with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Capt. Randy Dover of the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office believes a robbery in that jurisdiction could be connected to the two in Richmond County.

Anyone who can identify the suspect is encouraged to call RPD Detective Lt. Steve Odom at 910-895-2468 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454, where the caller can remain anonymous.
