HAMLET— A Robeson County man suspected of a break-in and accused of biting the arresting deputy was released from the Richmond County Jail Thursday afternoon.

According to an arrest warrant, 32-year-old Shawn Anthony Chavis, of Fairmont, broke into a building on County Home Road near Hamlet on May 14.

Warrants state that Chavis also attempted to pull away from and hit deputies, refused to obey commands, and bit Deputy Travis Bohman on the arm while being taken to jail.

Chavis was arrested and charged with one misdemeanor count each of breaking or entering, resisting a public officer and assault on a government employee or official and jailed on a $5,000 secured bond.

The defendant appeared in court Thursday where the breaking and entering and resisting charges were dismissed, according to jail records. Chavis reportedly received time served on the assault charge.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show Chavis has a record of convictions dating back to 2005.

He was incarcerated for less than three months following 2008 convictions for resisting and assaulting an officer, breaking and entering, trespassing and property damage.

Chavis was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in 2011 and his probation was revoked the following year, landing him behind bars for 16 months. He went back to prison on a post-release revocation in 2013 for six months.

He also served time for burglary, assault inflicting serious injury, common law robbery, breaking and entering and larceny.
