WARRANTS: Murder defendant injured in fight at Richmond County Jail

ROCKINGHAM — A fight in the Richmond County Jail left a murder defendant with serious injuries and resulted in additional charge for four other detainees.

According to warrants, Patrick Lynn Cagle of Hamlet, David T. Goins of East Rockingham, Robert Leslie Melton Jr. of Hamlet and Timothy Lee Stanback of Rockingham beat up Patrick Grant on April 19, causing fractures to his face and a gash on his head.

Cagle, Goins, Melton and Stanback were each charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and given an additional $25,000 secured bond.

Grant is charged with the April 2020 murder of 37-year-old John Louis Grant in East Rockingham. Jail records show Grant was also charged with assault inflicting serious injury in August 2020, assault with a deadly weapon in January and assault with serious bodily injury in February and simple assault on April 5. He is being held on a combined $1,220,500 secured bond.

Cagle has been in jail since last August, accused of shooting into a vehicle in a church parking lot in Ellerbe. His charges include going armed to the terror of the people, communicating a threat of mass violence at a place of religious worship and attempted larceny of a motor vehicle. His current combined bond is $1,075,000.

Goins is facing a slew of drug charges stemming from an investigation and arrest in February of this year, including trafficking both methamphetamine and heroin. His current combined bond is $575,000.

Melton was arrested in December and is facing numerous charges including larceny of motor vehicle parts, meth possession and robbery with a dangerous weapon. His current combined bond is $62,000.

Stanback was charged in March 2021 with multiple counts of sex offence in a parental role. His current combined bond is $275,000.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
