Woman found unconscious near Burger King dies, Rockingham police investigating

ROCKINGHAM — Police are investigating a suspicious death near a fast food restaurant last week.

According to an incident report from the Rockingham Police Department, Officer J.D. Webster responded to Burger King just before 3 p.m. March 2 “in reference to a female unconscious in the roadway.”

That female was 41-year-old Deana Brock Poplin of Hamlet.

The reports states that Poplin was “possibly” run over by a suspect vehicle, listed as Hyundai Santa Fe.

Poplin died on March 3, according to her obituary with McNeill Funeral Home.

Detective Lt. George Gillenwater said Wednesday that the case is still active and investigators are waiting on the report from the state medical examiner’s office.

If the death is ruled a homicide, it would make the fourth in the city limits this year.
