ROCKINGHAM — Despite only carrying two of the eight counties in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, former pastor Mark Harris came out on top in Tuesday’s mid-term election.

It was after 1 a.m. before the N.C. State Board of Elections showed all 210 precincts reporting, with Harris defeating Democratic opponent Dan McCready by fewer than 2,000 votes.

ROCKINGHAM — Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee shook hundreds of hands Wednesday in the first of four stops campaigning for House hopeful Mark Harris.

A large crowd of conservatives, including local pastors and politicians, awaited the Republican heavyweight’s arrival in the parking lot of the Richmond County Cooperative Extension office, which is serving as an early voting site.

Huckabee took the time to pose for photos — including a selfie with Hamlet City Manager Jonathan Blanton — sign autographs and briefly speak with those in attendance.

ROCKINGHAM — One congressional candidate has some heavy hitters stumping for him on the campaign trail.

Former Arkansas governor and two-time presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee will be making several stops throughout the 9th Congressional District on Wednesday, including in Richmond County, encouraging voters to choose Republican Mark Harris.

He is scheduled to be at the early voting location, the Cooperative Extension office on Caroline Street, around 1:45 p.m., before heading west for appearances in Anson and Union counties later in the afternoon.

ROCKINGHAM-- Nine candidates for four offices had a chance to mingle with voters and discuss their platforms Tuesday evening at Richmond Young Professionals’ Pints and Politics event.

Although not every candidate had an opponent present, they were still allowed to take questions from the audience.

The coverage of the forum is split into three parts: U.S. House of Representatives race; N.C. Senate and House of Representatives; Richmond County Board of Commissioners.

Congressional Seat a Pivotal Race

North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District race has become one of the most-watched contests in the nation, especially following Rep. Robert Pittenger’s defeat in the Republican primary by former Charlotte pastor Mark Harris.

Democrats are hoping to flip that seat with their young challenger, retired Marine Dan McCready.

A recent New York Times poll shows Harris leading McCready 47 percent to 42 percent, with 11 percent undecided.

Some of those undecided voters could swing toward Libertarian Jeff Scott, who wasn’t included in the poll, but was present at Tuesday’s forum.

Jeff Scott: Silence is War

American voters are sleepwalking again.

From the beginning of my campaign in February, I stated clearly in every public appearance that I am the "Peace candidate."

I support reductions in military spending and foreign arms sales. Yet, the defense budget just passed is a whopping $675 billion, 10 times that of Russia. American bombs, purchased by the Saudis, are falling on Yemeni civilians. A few members of Congress have finally woken up to the fact that Americans are partners in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, but most of our elected representatives, and candidates, are still sleepwalking.
