In a World Full of Trends, Remain a Classic

Keeping up with the ever-so-changing trends can often be a struggle. It’s not only costly but can sometimes be a little discouraging. For example, you finally save up and decide to splurge on those new shoes that everyone has been raving about…only to realize two weeks later, that shoe style is no longer trending and everyone is on to the next hottest style. Now you’re left wondering if you made the best decision, if you should return those shoes for another pair, or just live without them. I’ll be honest, I have done this plenty of times!

However, as a stylist, I’ve learned it’s best to value longevity over trends. You want to find “classic” key pieces that are cost efficient and that fit your wardrobe at any given time, season, or occasion. This means investing in those “go-to-pieces” such as a black tailored blazer which pairs well with dress trousers. You can also opt for a graphic tee and maybe some skinny jeans that compliments the blazer in a more casual fun look. There is also that “crisp, white button-down” shirt that pairs well with almost anything. And what about that beautiful statement necklace that makes any blouse even more fabulous and chic!

One of the things I admire about having a classic personal style is that once you’ve figured out what or how to refine your style, it gives you the freedom to express your own individuality. Your look is clean, traditional and timeless!

Here are a few pointers to keep in mind: take the time to look for fashion and style inspiration in magazines or online. Clean out your closet, throw away or donate items you haven’t worn in the past year or so. That way you can have a fresh start.

Shop smarter, look for deals online or at consignment shops. It’s okay to splurge on staple pieces (ie. leather boots). Don’t be afraid to ask for help, talk with a personal stylist, or a sales associate who has expertise in style. Don’t focus on size or designer labels. Be creative and try different patterns, textures, colors etc. Embrace your style, celebrate your individuality, and most importantly remain a classic.
