ROCKINGHAM — Law enforcement officials are so far staying quiet about an investigation at the Shell station on U.S. 74 Business.

A gray GMC Envoy with South Carolina plates was sitting in the store’s east driveway, a white sheet draped over the passenger side.

Witnesses inside the store say the vehicle drove up at 12:43 p.m. and officers arrived two minutes later.

Investigators from both the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the Rockingham Police Department were on scene, as well personnel from FirstHealth EMS.

The only detail Chief Billy Kelly would confirm is that there was a body.

The store remained open for business, but several pumps were blocked off with crime scene tape.

Several officers remained on the scene with the vehicle after 3 p.m.

The Richmond Observer will have more information as it becomes available.
