HAMLET – More than thirty seniors enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, orange juice, milk, and hot coffee on the morning of August 15 at the Hamlet Senior Center, located at 102 Veterans Drive.  The Hamlet Senior Citizens Choir sang three beautiful gospel songs to entertain the group as they dined—“Chilly Wind Don’t Blow,” “I Love You Jesus,” and “Blessing to Be Alive.” The ladies that make up the choir include Cynthia Belton, Lucinda Graham, Barbara Brown, Esther Gainey, Charlie Shull, Carol Nicholson, Diane Collins, and Ogretis Wilson on piano.

Hamlet Senior Center staff, which includes Doris Cox, Rosa Brown, Ronald Nicholson, and director Nikki Sewell, prepared and served the delicious breakfast. Ms. Cox introduced Pastor Charles Quick of Pemberton Temple Church of God in Christ in Hamlet as the guest speaker. As he began, Quick said, “We need to let the Lord know that we love Him. It is a blessing to be alive. As long as I have God in my life, I can overcome every obstacle.”

Pastor Quick wore special gloves on his hands, and shared how he was once engulfed in a fireball of flames, causing second and third degree burns to his face, hands, and body. But he joked, “I am still alive and handsome– thanks to God!”

He shared a passage from Mark 12:30-31 in which Jesus was asked about the commandments.  When Jesus responded to “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind and with all thy strength. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”

Pastor Quick continued, “Jesus was saying to love one another as I have loved you. Some people don’t love themselves. I love everybody! You might think that’s impossible, but Christ changes your viewpoint. I am a truth preaching preacher. You might see someone and think you don’t like them because of the way they walk or carry themselves. But once you accept Jesus into your life, you will never feel that way again. I used to see a whole lot of ugly folks, but not anymore.”

“You ladies have to love yourself first. I can see by the way you dress – everything matches; you walk like you feel good;, and you love others. Love does no harm! God compels you to be obedient. God loved us so much, He sent his only begotten son to hang, bleed and die on the cross for our sins. We need God in every part of our lives, to direct our path. Jesus is the pilot, not the co-pilot. He must be the Lord of all or not the Lord at all. He is with us in good times and bad, and He still loves you no matter what you do. God loves you in spite of your mistakes, unconditionally. He will share His love with you and restore you and others. We all have the golden opportunity to change others with God. Someone showed me love, and God’s love changed me. I wish all of you love and kindness.”

Pastor Charles Quick grew up in the Pemberton Temple Church of God in Christ, located at 209 Monroe Avenue in Hamlet.
