ROCKINGHAM — The World Language Club at Richmond Senior celebrated the school’s first ever las quinceañera on April 13.
The event honored six high school girls “as they marked a cherished tradition in Hispanic cultures, symbolizing a journey from girlhood to womanhood,” integrating themes of tradition, family and community, according to Spanish teacher Esther Salas.
The event is celebrated in Hispanic cultures as a girl turns 15. According to Britanica, the term is used for both the celebration and the celebrant.
“At this pivotal stage, each quinceañera embarks on a personal journey of self-discovery, embracing identity and aspirations, representing personal growth and new opportunities,” Salas said. “More than just a party, this celebration embodies identity, family, and community, honoring cultural heritage and the spirit of youth.”
Salas said there was help for the event from the Hispanic community — hair stylists, food, desserts, cake, and decorations to piñata artists — who contributed without cost, “just their talent in abundance.”
