AT THE MOVIES: Stay home for ‘Annabelle Comes Home’

After six years and five different films, the “Conjuring” producers have decided to revisit the coveted cash cow known as “Annabelle.”

This film, which actually features some bits and pieces with Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren, follows their daughter, Judy (played by McKenna Grace, who was a standout in the terrific Netflix series “The Haunting of Hill House”) in her early adolescence, as she deals with social criticism for her parents behavior. But, the story’s conflict progresses from bad to worse when her babysitter’s friend accidentally unleashes the Annabelle doll and all of its co-conspirators to wreak havoc on the occupants of the house.

While I wish I could say that this was a surprisingly well-crafted and fun film, similar to its predecessor, “Annabelle: Creation,” it unfortunately is not. From the horribly timed jump scares, to the sickeningly bland direction, and the horribly timed comedy, the final product makes you think that the producers just took a dart board with random ideas jotted on it, and choose whichever they hit.

For the first time in an extremely long time, I found myself almost dozing off during the film, because even the jump scares were so terribly predictable that they could only scare someone who is willfully ignorant when it comes to horror movies. If you have seen more than one modern horror flick, then you can easily guess everything that’s gonna happen within 20 minutes of the film starting.

One of the only saving graces is the commendable idea that Warner Brothers has truly created a horror universe similar to the MCU, with similar stories, diverse characters and settings that are all connected by an overarching narrative.

Overall, “Annabelle Comes Home” is forgettable — and terribly predictable — which makes it the kind of movie you’d be better off renting from RedBox.
