Beauty & Wellness Corner with Kelly: Bronzer Do’s and Don’ts

Summertime is in full swing and those that need a little extra sun kissed glow tend to reach for the bronzer.

Bronzer is a quick and easy way to achieve the look you want if you follow these do’s and don’ts:


Don’t assume every bronzer works on every skin tone. Just like blush and foundation, you need to find the right bronzer for your skin tone. If you are fair skinned you don’t need as dark a bronzer as a deeper complexion. If you feel like your bronzer looks orange on you, or is fake looking, chances are it is too dark. If you find yourself having to put on multiple layers of the product, it is probably not dark enough.

Don’t use bronzer as a contour powder. A lot of people use their bronzer as a contouring powder and in most cases, this is a don’t. Bronzers are usually warm toned and have a slight shimmer to them. Contouring powders tend to be cool toned and should always be matte. The point of contouring is to de-emphasize a place on your face. Anything warm and shimmery is going to come closer to a highlighter and would undo any contouring you are attempting.

Do go for a bronzing duo. Your best bet is to go for a bronzing palette or duo that has more than one shade. For example, the Merle Norman Bronzing Duo has two shades that let you mix shades and go with a lighter or darker shade as needed.


Do know where to place your bronzer- The general rule of thumb is to place your bronzer anywhere the sun naturally hits your face. This is going to give you the most natural, sun kissed effect.  Those areas will be the top of your forehead, bridge of your nose, tip of chin, and cheekbones. After concentrating on those areas, you can always go back and dust a small amount of bronzer all over your face to give you more color.
