COLUMN: Richmond County comes out to support Alzheimer’s patients, caregivers

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and when you work with our beautiful aging population it becomes a very important month.

There is no cure but that doesn’t mean that one day there can’t be, so we fight together to make that happen.

The Alzheimer’s Association fights for those suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s as well as their support system. On Nov. 8, members of our community came together to walk a mile and spread awareness about ALZ by filling the park with purple.

A very big thank you to Paula Zembal from the ALZ Association for coming out and speaking. She can help with setting up a longest day fundraiser; if anyone is interested, I can get you in touch with her.

Thank you you Amanda Kempen, our local outreach person for ALZ and the director of Hamlet Senior Center. Thank you Janice and Judy for all the amazing support you provide to these events. Thank you Richmond County Hospice for providing our lunch and allowing staff to stay to support the our walkers in the awesome cheering section with the seniors (it was inspiring to hear the cheers). Thank you Carolina Hearts for staying for the walk and speaker and helping provide the after walk snack.

Seventy-ish people came together to make a difference and it was a beautiful sight to see and hear.
