ELLERBE — Country cover band Dark Horse returned to the World’s Largest Strawberry on Thursday.

The band opened the free concert series at The Berry Patch in late August.

Based in Moore County, the band features Richmond County natives Frankie Moree on vocals and guitar, Dean Caulder on drums and Scott Infinger on bass.

Johnny Howington of Lillington is the regular steel guitar player, but like the last time, couldn’t make it due to his job as a teacher. So Dwayne Whalen again made the drive from Chillicothe, Ohio, to play the gig.

The band played a variety of country and Southern rock songs, ranging from Merle Haggard’s “Workin’ Man Blues” to Band of Heathens’ “Hurricane.”

Moree said he and the band has been fortunate recently to have 2-3 gigs each week, whether as a full band, the scaled-down Dark Horse Duo or by himself. Many venues were closed for months due to government mandates in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

He also hosts an open-mic night on Wednesdays at 715 Bar and Grill in Southern Pines.

Dark Horse was recently awarded third place in the Best of the Pines for best band and Moree won third for best solo act.

Lee Berry said Thursday that he wasn’t sure if they were going to host any more concerts this fall, but he and wife, Amy, previously told the RO they plan to continue when temperatures warm up in the spring.
